BPC-157 research summaries

Summaries of the published work, grouped by the model used. Species and model are stated in every case, because a finding without its model is not a finding.

How to read this page

Everything below describes what researchers did and what they reported. None of it describes an effect in humans, and none of it should be read as an expected outcome. Where a study is preclinical, it is labelled preclinical.

Tendon and ligament models

This is the most frequently cited group in the BPC-157 literature. Rat models of transected or crushed Achilles tendon have been used repeatedly, with outcomes assessed by biomechanical testing, histology and functional scoring.

Reported findings across this group include changes in tendon fibroblast outgrowth in culture, and differences in biomechanical parameters between treated and control groups in the animal models. Work in this area has also examined medial collateral ligament injury in rats.

Model: rat, induced injury. Nature of evidence: preclinical.

Gastrointestinal models

BPC-157 originates from work on gastric juice proteins, so it is unsurprising that the gastrointestinal literature is substantial. Models have included ethanol-induced gastric lesions, NSAID-induced mucosal damage, and induced colitis in rodents.

This group is where the reported effects have been most consistent across publications, and it is also the area where limited early human investigation has been referenced in relation to inflammatory bowel disease.

Model: rat and mouse, chemically induced injury. Nature of evidence: predominantly preclinical.

Muscle injury models

Crush injury and laceration models in rats have been used to assess muscle healing parameters, with outcomes measured by functional recovery and histological assessment.

Model: rat, induced injury. Nature of evidence: preclinical.

Vascular and angiogenesis work

Several studies have examined effects on blood vessel formation, including work reporting upregulation of VEGFR2 and effects on endothelial cell behaviour in culture. Some animal work has examined vascular occlusion models.

Model: cell culture and rodent. Nature of evidence: preclinical, mechanistic.

Nerve and central nervous system models

A smaller body of work has examined peripheral nerve injury models and various central nervous system models in rodents. This group is less developed than the tendon and gastrointestinal literature.

Model: rodent. Nature of evidence: preclinical, early.

What the body of work does not include

  • Large randomised placebo-controlled human efficacy trials for any indication.
  • Substantial independent replication outside the principal research groups.
  • Long-term safety data in humans.
  • Established pharmacokinetic characterisation in humans.
